INTERNATIONAL ABUJA PHOTOFESTIVAL 2024, Abuja; Nigeria

   0ctober, 21. – 26. 2024

    “N O T   M Y   F R E E D O M”

My selected photographs belong to a constantly evolving photographic project, titled: “NOT MY FREEDOM”.

Abuja Photo Festival is designed to create an artistic dialogue between the capital city of the most populous black nation and the rest of the world. It aims to connect the international audience to indigenous art that highlights the existential realities of the modern world through local eyes. Organized by Art for Humanity Foundation Nigeria since 2017, Abuja Photo Festival was founded for the art community and the general public to interact with art as tool for social change. The event re-presents art as a critical part of social evolution with the power to prompt conversations and move into spaces beyond the borders of biases and stereotypes. It showcases works by activist-creatives who seek to visually protest against existing gaps in the delivery social justice in Nigeria. With over 10,000 visitors, who come to the various locations of the festival for the exhibition and workshops, in the last five years, the festival has featured works from artistic movements such Expressionism and Futurism and brilliant individualists such as George Osodi, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Don Barber, Aisha Augie-Kuta, Reze Bonna, Anita Eboigbe, Hakeem Salaam, Nelly Ating, Yagazie Eguare has graced its podium. This year, Abuja Photo Festival will take the discourse about art in the directions of democracy, exploring the connections between art, artists and the making of a functional society. The dynamics of all activities will artistically mainstream the deocratic pulse of the nation. Text: Abuja Foto festival

For the DIVERSEartLA 2022, curated by Marisa Caicholo at the LA Art Show, curator Kisito Assangni is contributing a curated program of international video artists as part of an architectural installation engaging with issues of environmental health and climate change. The large-scale sculptural object created by Daniela Soberman, which houses the video components and photographic elements, is curated by Max Presneill of the Torrance Art museum.
Climate change is arguably the most pressing socio-political issue of our time, with famine, poverty, loss of bio-diversity, and mass-relocation hanging in the balance. Nowadays, politically responsible contemporary art needs to explicitly take account of ecological issues.
ECOPOETICS OF GENERIC WORLD offers a range of artistic positions and responses to the dichotomy of impending climate change.

Boundaries of Reason

ABUJA PHOTO FESTIVAL 5th EDITION

VISION: To employ photography as tool for positive social change.

MISSION: To explore photography as a medium of dialogue about the existential realities of the society

26. – 30. Oktober 2021 Abuja, Nigeria

For several months I have been dealing with the political and social situation in Agadez, Niger. My photographic works were created against this background. In particular, it is about the EU regulation Law No.: 2015-36, which criminalizes transport and assistance for migration to Europe and thus criminalizes formerly free traditional actions. It is about the social impact this has on people in different cities in Niger.

The term Boda Boda is an adaptation of the word border and alludes to a cross-border movement, suggesting physical mobility and movement across lines that universally represent the divide of land and space. More literally, the boda boda is a motorbile, key form of transport across many African cities, it serves as a purpose built vehicle to quickly and easily move goods and people between places. We refer to this festival as a purpose built vehicle to mobilise video-art across destinations between artist and viewer. Boda Boda Lounge is a project, which aims to diffuse video art across the continent. It was initiated by the Visual Arts Network of South Africa (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Centre d’art Waza (Lubumbashi, DRC) in 2014. Boda Boda Lounge intends to enable wide access for African artists to be part of the festival and at the same time working with a range of African arts organisations. It is an engagement with low-cost, widely accessible exchange processes on the African Continent.                          Text copyright: Contemporary&

»TIME is Love Screening« aims to offer spectators a selection of works through which they can examine various artistic approaches and discover both the contrasts stemming from differences in cultural context as well as the common features due to the increasing globalisation of the art world. The program hopes to encourage the audience to reflect on the normative understanding of relationships in our modern society.

The selected artists deliver us without concession a range of complexities and passions generated by human relationships. Each of the artists leads an interdisciplinary practice bringing a questioning and a criticism on a system of relation to others which appears to us as being dying. Difficult, complex relations, which faint gradually for the benefit of personal, economic and coarse interests. Each of the presented movies scrutinizes with attention the vestiges of these human connections which it is today necessary to reactivate and to resuscitate. Text: ZKM Karlsruhe TIL.

Video Paradigms from Nigeria:
